Child Bride Marriage Annulled In Landmark Case (India)

Child Bride Marriage Annulled In Landmark Case (India)

Laxmi Sargara was only a year old when her parents married her to 3-year-old Rakesh. Nearly two decades later, the Indian woman successfully had the marriage annulled in what is considered a landmark judiciary case, Agence France Presse reports.

According to the BBC, Sargara learnt about the marriage only this month, when her in-laws came to take her back to their family home.

"I was unhappy about the marriage,” Sargara told AFP. “I told my parents who did not agree with me, then I sought help."
The bride turned to a social worker in her hometown Jodhpur and managed to convince her husband, Rakesh, to have the marriage declared void.

"It is the first example we know of a couple wed in childhood wanting the marriage to be annulled, and we hope that others take inspiration from it," social worker Kriti Bharti told AFP.

Child marriage is illegal in India under the country's Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, yet the practice is common in poorer regions -- such as Sargara's home province Rajasthan -- the BBC reports.

Indu Chopra, a program director of the woman and child development department of Rajasthan state, explained to CNN that child marriages are a "social agreement, a document endorsed by witnesses, lawyers from both sides and attested legally," yet not a marriage legal under Indian law.
In a recent report, UNICEF says 47 percent of Indian women between the ages of 20 and 24 were married before the age of 18.

“Child marriage is linked to poverty, lack of education and, above all, to the entrenched social norms that push parents to marry their daughters off early,” said UNICEF Representative for India Karin Hulshof on the organization's website.

Argentina turns away British ships (World News)

Argentina turns away British ships (World News)

News Report from The Australian News Site:

TWO British cruise ships visiting the Falkland Islands have been refused entry to an Argentine port, amid tension over the disputed archipelago.

The Adonia, owned by P&O cruises, and the Princess Cruises vessel Star Princess were both blocked from entering Ushuaia in southern Argentina today after both ships stopped at the Falklands on Sunday.

"We are very concerned to hear the Adonia and Star Princess have been refused access to the port of Ushuaia," a spokesman for Britain's Foreign Office said in London.

"There can be no justification for interference in free and legitimate commerce.

"British diplomats in Argentina are urgently seeking to clarify the circumstances surrounding this incident, and we are in contact with the company concerned."

Tensions are running high between Britain and Argentina over the Falklands, which London controls but Buenos Aires claims, ahead of the 30th anniversary in April of the start of the war between the two nations over the South Atlantic islands.

Argentina has also reacted angrily to the deployment of Prince William to the Falklands as part of his job as a Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot, and to a planned fact-finding trip by British MPs next month.

The Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego said they "applied the law" in denying port access to the Carnival Corporation ships the Star Princess and the Adonia.

"The Governor of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, Fabiana Rios, decided not to allow the docking in the port of Ushuaia (3200km south of Buenos Aires)" of the two ships, Tierra del Fuego authorities said.

"We've never had a ship stopped from coming into an Argentine port before," Julie Benson, spokeswoman for Carnival affiliate Princess Cruises, said.

Carnival UK, which owns both P&O and Princess Cruises, said the Adonia was now sailing towards Punta Arenas in Chile, its next port of call on an 87-night tour of South America.

The Star Princess was on a 14-night South America cruise which started in Rio de Janeiro on February 18.

The Falklands, located off the southern coast of Argentina, have been under British control since 1833.
A brief 74-day war in 1982 cost the lives of 649 Argentine troops, 255 British troops and three Falkland Islanders, with Britain retaining control.

The United Nations has called on Britain to start talk on decolonisation, but London has refused.

Bidve's friends, local leaders and residents prepared to attend a candle-light vigil in his memory today evening at the spot in Salford where he was killed.

A similar vigil planned in New Delhi is scheduled to culminate outside the British High Commission.

In Salford, hundreds of people are expected to attend the candle-light vigil initially organised by friends of Bidve on Facebook.

Senior Labour MP Keith Vaz is also expected to attend the event, besides local leaders and residents appalled at the incident.

Officers from the Greater Manchester Police last night left for India to meet Bidve's family.

Bidve, 23, who was a postgraduate student of Microelectronics at Lancaster University, died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

He was described by tutors as "an outstanding applicant at the very beginning of a promising career".

The Greater Manchester Police said the reward of 50,000 pounds for information related to the case was still on offer.

Two officers from the police force last night traveled to India to meet the Bidve family in Pune.
