MANILA, Philippines : Instead of spending a quiet evening at home on New Year's eve, people went to government-sponsored parties in several well-known places around Metro Manila.
Quezon City residents flocked to Eastwood City, Libis, where the local government sponsored a New Year countdown party with performances from well-known artists such as Gary Valenciano, Billy Crawford, The Dawn, Amber Davis, Urbanation, and dance group Philippine AllStars.
The Eastwood party also featured a “star drop,” the local equivalent of the “ball drop” on New York's Time Square. A fireworks display ensued when the clock struck 12 a.m.

Makati officials, meanwhile, sponsored a street party along Ayala corner Makati Avenue.
Street performers and magicians entertained partygoers, while bands such as the Antimano Band, Bloom Brothers, Grupong Pendong, The Company, and The Dawn performed.
At midnight, people watched a 15-minute fireworks display made more special by hotels lighting up their holiday decorations.
In Manila, the local government pulled off a New Year celebration at Luneta 2 days after the park was the venue of Rizal Day commemorative ceremonies.
The party at Luneta featured ballroom music by Lady Valerie and Orchestra, plus a fireworks display come New Year.
Numerous kiosks sold food and drinks, while families were encouraged to hold their picnic at the park.
