MANILA, Philippines – Three earthquakes were recorded in Negros Oriental on Saturday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), said the latest earthquake happened at 1:39 p.m. 10 kilometers northwest of La Libertad in Negros Oriental.

The quake, with a magnitude of 4.5, was tectonic in origin. Intensity 4 was experienced in Valle Hermoso in Negros Oriental, and intensity 3 in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental; Cebu City and Iloilo City.

In Guihulngan City, people in front of the City Public Market panicked when they felt the quake.

DzMM's Dexter Ganibe reported that stall owners were right outside the public market hoping to be allowed access inside the building to inspect their wares after Monday’s strong quake hit the province.

“Nakikiusap sa local na pamahalan na papasukin sila para masuri at maayos ang kanilang mga gamit. Hiling nila kay mayor papasukin sila at kukunin lamang ang mga valuables sa loob. Hindi pa naman sila magtitinda,” reported Ganibe.

However, Ganibe was in the middle of his report when the earthquake struck.

“Malakas na lindol ang yumayanig dito! Heto, umuuga ang lupa at nagtatakbuhan ang mga tao,” he reported.
Ganibe had described the tremor as an aftershock. “Medyo malakas ang paguga at napapasayaw itong poste ng elektrisidad,” he said.

Ganibe said people were still reeling from the aftershock they felt just a few minutes ago.

“Yung nauna mga 1:30 intensity 3 or 4 ang pagyanig. Sinundan ngayon ng mga ala-1:39. Parang dinuduyan,” he said.

The Phivolcs website said a magnitude 3.8 quake happened about 9 minutes earlier and was located 19 kilometers northwest of Guilhungan, Negros Oriental.

The tremor was also tectonic in origin. Intensity 3 was felt in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, while intensity 1 was experienced in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental and La Libertad, Negros Oriental.

Two earlier quakes—a magnitude 2.7 at 12:41 a.m. in Canlaon City and 2.8 magnitude at 8:22 a.m. in Guihungan, both in Negros Oriental—also occurred Saturday morning.

Quake jolts Lanao, Batangas

Meanwhile, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck Lanao del Sur early dawn Saturday.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred at 1:30 a.m., 11 kilometers west of Bumbaran, Lanao del Sur.

The tremor was also tectonic in origin.

In Batangas, a magnitude 4.1 quake shook Calatagan at 12:55 a.m. also on Saturday. Intensity 2 was felt in Balayan and Calaca, Batangas.

No aftershocks or damages were reported.
