Punjab News (India) - According to hearsay, People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Singh Badal said that if the reports of Gaganajit Singh Barnala — a senior leader of SAD (Longowal), a constituent party of the Sanjha Morcha — joining the Congress were true, then it was most unfortunate.
Speaking at the sidelines of a rally, Manpreet said: “We came to know about this development from the media. All I can say is that while the SAD (Longowal) leadership will be the best people to comment on this issue, there is no danger or change in our equation with the party.” Gaganajit is the son of former chief minister Surjit Singh Barnala, who broke away from SAD(B) to form his own party. According to sources, Gaganajit will hold a meeting with senior Congress leaders in New Delhi and his joining the party, along with his SAD (Longowal) members, could help him get a ticket from Dhuri.
Though SAD (Longowal) does not enjoy a huge support base in Punjab, yet the presence of leaders like Surjit Singh Barnala — a Taksali Akali leader — adds value to the PPP and the Sanjha Morcha stage. PPP which goes to polls for the first time in 2012 is also trying to bring on board the BSP and the Janata dal (United). Meanwhile, asked about Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal visiting Beas MLA Manjinder Singh Kang, Manpreet said: “Kang is defunct as far as Punjab politics is concerned.
He has not been active in any issues of PPP or for that matter in his own constituency. So, a defunct force cannot simply get up one day and say he will contest elections. A person has to work in an area and then lead it. So, the CM visiting Kang or Kang not coming clean on his position regarding if he wants stay with PPP or go back to SAD(B), is of little significance now. He does not hold much importance for PPP.”
