Directed by Walter Salles, whose credits include “The Motorcycle Diaries” and “Dark Water,” “On the Road” tells the story of an aspiring New York writer named Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), his friend Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), and their journey back and forth across America seeking thrills—along with Dean’s very liberated young wife Marylou (Kristen Stewart). The novel is semi-autobiographical, Sal being Kerouac’s alter ego, and Dean standing for Neal Cassady—a major figure of the Beat Generation of the 50s and the psychedelic movement of the 60s.

“The only people that interest me are the mad ones,” goes that line of Riley’s narration in the movie. “The ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like roman candles across the night.”
Also starring Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard and Elisabeth Moss, “On the Road” will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this year.
