Ateneo begins search for new coach
MANILA, Philippines – Multi-titled coach Norman Black is planning to step down from his post as head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles to return to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Jose Ramon Villarin, Ateneo de Manila University President, announced through a memorandum that Black will be relinquishing his coaching job after the 2012 UAAP basketball season.
“It is with regret that I inform the community that Coach Norman Black, who we all know has been such an outstanding coach for the Ateneo Blue Eagles these last seven years, has indicated his desire to return to the PBA where he hopes to replicate his successful system,” said Villarin.
Villarin said that after stepping down, Black will remain as Ateneo’s consultant to the men’s basketball program for two years
The Ateneo president said he has already formed a committee to find a suitable replacement for Black.
The committee will be composed of committee chairman Edward Go, Fr. Nemesio Que SJ, Ricky Vargas, Jack Huang and Mr. Joey Campos.
Black, who took over the Ateneo coaching job in 2005, steered the Blue Eagles to 4 consecutive title wins since the 2008-2009 season.
Before joining Ateneo, he coached several PBA teams, including San Miguel Beermen, Mobiline Phone Pals, Pop Cola 800s, and Sta. Lucia Realtors.
Black was also a superb PBA import in the 80's, playing for teams like Great Taste Coffee, Magnolia and San Miguel.
