President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III went to Dumaguete City on his birthday to visit the areas affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that shook Visayas on Monday.
A Malacanang official in a press statement said President Aquino was scheduled to inspect the earthquake-stricken areas and meet residents affected by the calamity, as well as oversee the government relief operations.
“President Aquino has been keeping abreast of the situation since the earthquake struck Monday morning. Agencies and departments are implementing his instructions concerning the disaster relief and information-dissemination operations,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda stated.
He said the President is in touch with Negros Oriental representative Jocelyn Limkaichong regarding Guihulngan City, the municipalities of La Libertad, Tayasan, and Jimalalud which were badly hit by the earthquake.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 26 fatalities, 52 injured persons, and 71 missing individuals following Monday’s temblor.
