Morong 43 files anti-torture case vs Gloria Arroyo (Philippines)

>
Morong 43, the group of health workers who were accused to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) during the administration of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, has reportedly filed an anti-torture case against the latter.

It can be recalled that the Morong 43 has been suspected by the pastadministration of doing destabilization efforts against the government.

They were arrested in Morong, Rizal and charged with illegal possession of firearms and explosives. They were jailed in Camp Bagong Diwa in Lower Bicutan, Taguig City.

On December 11, 2010, President Benigno Aquino III ordered the justice department to withdraw the case against them.

In a speech delivered at the 62nd Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, Aquino said:

The medical workers were arrested in the waning days of the Arroyoadministration on the suspicion that they were aiding NPA insurgents. These are valid concerns. Nevertheless, we recognize that their right to due process was denied them. As a government that is committed to the rule of law and the rights of man, this cannot stand. Therefore, I have ordered the DOJ to withdraw the informations filed before the court. This will, in effect, subject to court approval, free those among them who have no other standing warrants in other courts.
