Ex-Comelec chief : Abalos signs surety bond for P2.2-M bail (Philippines)

>
A day after a Pasay City court allowed him to post bail, former Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Benjamin Abalos signed on Thursday a surety bond that would help him gain temporary liberty.

The former Comelec chairman signed 11 bail documents for the 11 counts of electoral sabotage lodged against him Thursday morning, radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported.

He signed the bonds before he was to attend a hearing before a separate Pasay court where he faces additional counts of electoral sabotage.

Abalos was quoted in the report as saying he needed to actually shell out only four percent of the bail recommended by the court.

On Wednesday, the Pasay Regional Trial Court branch 117 allowed him to post P2.2 million in bail, or P200,000 for each of the 11 counts of electoral sabotage.

However, Abalos also faces separate charges of electoral sabotage before the Pasay RTC Branch 112.

Abalos said he was confident he can get a similar ruling from Branch 112.
