No more plastic in Marikina (Philippines)

>
The local government of Marikina City has banned the use of plastic and styrofoam as containers and shopping bags in supermarkets and department stores.

Based on City Ordinance No. 18, Marikina Mayor Del De Guzman pursued the ban to lessen the accumulated plastic garbage in sanitary landfills.

"Plastic garbage clogs our waterways which is the cause of flooding during the rainy season. That's why, like the cities of Las PiƱas and Muntinlupa, we are asking our residents to cooperate with us and help save our environment," De Guzman said.

Establishments will be fined and sanctioned in case of violations:

  • First offense - P1,000
  • Second offense - P3,000 and temporary closure of establishment
  • Third offense - P5,000 and permanent closure
Individual violators will meanwhile be fined P500 per offense. If he/she fails to pay the penalty, he shall render an eight hour community service or a minimum of 200cc blood donation.
