Report from ABS-CBN News:
MANILA, Philippines – Navotas Rep. Tobias “Toby” Tiangco apologized to the impeachment court after he was caught on camera sitting inside the Senate session hall on day 27 of the trial without his shoes on.
Tiangco said he never meant to show disrespect to the impeachment court by removing his shoes.
“I would like to make an apology because of what happened yesterday. There were pictures in the newspaper that showed me without my shoes on, with just my socks sitting there. I did not mean to show disrespect to this honorable court by removing my shoes,” he said.
The lawmaker said he “was just tired and I wanted to relax a bit and so during recess, I took off my shoes.”
Presiding Judge Juan Ponce Enrile and Senator-judge Miriam Defensor Santiago accepted Tiangco’s apology.
Santiago, however, said in jest that Tiangco was probably preserving the quality of his leather shoes in connection with the delay of his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel.
“If it were up to me, I would also accept your apology considering you probably wanted to preserve the quality of your leatherwear. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you have not received your PDAF,” the lady senator from Iloilo said.
The defense panel of Chief Justice Renato Corona presented Tiangco as their first witness on Monday in an attempt to show that the chief justice was not given due process due to the "blitzkrieg" filing of the impeachment complaint last December 12, 2011.
Netizens had different reactions to Tiangco's photo. @marjreyes65 said on Twitter that Tiangco should study good manners and right conduct, because it's "bad manners to take [off] shoes and dangle feet in front of [media people]."
On Facebook, meanwhile, Nel T. Ringor praised the cameraman for capturing the moment. "Galing naman," he said.
AaJumo Azis Micawayan joked that maybe Tiongco just wanted to show off his socks, and Juzzme Ordinary said, "Parang galing lang [siya] sa takbuhan."
Pons Santos, commenting on Tiangco being all by his lonesome in the photo, said, "It's nice to be different but it sucks to be alone!"
