FilOil: FEU gets win number three behind RR’s 22 (Philippines)

>
The Arena in San Juan announcer Rolly Manlapaz branded Far Eastern University Tamaraws guard Ryan Roose Garcia as “The Rooster,” and cawed like one after each of his baskets.

Manlapaz did a lot of cawing that evening.

Garcia scored 13 of his 22 before halftime and Anthony Hargrove added 13 of his own to lead FEU over the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 74-67 Saturday, in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Tournament.

FEU kept the lead for most of the game, after Hargrove completed a three-point play to give them a 7-4 edge over the height-challenged Blazers. CSB took the lead only once throughout the forty minutes, after  CSB goes on a mini-run led by standout Jonathan Grey and capped off by a Dexter Garcia lay-in.

Hargrove and incoming sophomore Mike Tolomia answered with a run of their own with Hargrove scoring seven and Tolomia chipping in five to complete a 12-0 burst to put a dampener on CSB’s hot streak. Garcia then closed the half with a triple, maintaining a 10-point distance at the half, 44-34.

Tamaraw Terrence Romeo and Blazer Rhoele Maconocido traded barbs early in the third quarter, resulting in double technical fouls for both. An incensed Romeo responded by going for five straight points, with an ankle-breaker that left Maconocido on his heels. After a Romeo triple, FEU led by as much as 16, and continued to maintain it at 15 by the end of the third after another floater by Garcia.

The Blazers came back to life late in the fourth, after a fast break lay-in by Grey drew them within five, 69-64. A three-point play and two pairs of free throws by Mark Romero jumpstarted the blitz, and contributions from former Green Archer point guard Joel Tolentino and Ronnel Lastimosa added to the barrage.

With time winding down however, Blazers head coach Richard Del Rosario resorted to fouling in the dying minutes, but his Blazers weren’t able to convert anything from the field as center Robert Bartolo fumbled on most plays, in no small part to Hargrove’s interior defense. FEU’s free throws further inflated their lead, and a split forward by Gryann Mendoza iced the game at 74-67.

Garcia led FEU with 22 points, including a 3-of-5 shooting clip from deep, while Hargrove scored 13 points and hauled down nine rebounds.

For Benilde, Joel Tolentino shot his way to 16 points against some familiar opponents, followed by Grey with 14 and Romero with 10 of own.

The Tamaraws cruised to their third win of the season while the match handed the Blazers their third loss overall. - AMD, GMA News
