Dabawenyos celebrate this festival as a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. It is, therefore, a celebration of life.
This year, the Kadayawan Festival will probably fall on the 3rd week of August, as it usually does. The festival this year will definitely be extra special for it will happen at the same time of the Eid’l Fitr, a Muslim feast that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadhan.
The schedule of activities hasn’t been revealed yet by the city government. But, just to give the people an idea of what will happen, here is the list of events that are expected to take place.
- Floral Float Parade – traditional pageant of orchids and other flowers. Thousands of colorful flowers are formed into different shapes that the creator prefers. This is one of the most-watched event in the annual festival.
- Indak-Indakan Sa Kadalanan – aka “Dancing in the Streets”. This is a display of bright and dazzling colors of groups of people (communities, organizations, schools, or group of friends) as they perform different tribal dances on the streets. This is also a much-awaited event during Kadayawan festival.
- Hiyas sa Kadayawan – is a beauty pageant that showcases the stunningly gorgeous ladies of the different tribes of Davao.
