Maita Gomez is dead, former beauty queen turned activitist dies of heart attack

> Miss Philippines World 1967 Maita Gomez, who turned into an activist during the Marcos administration, died of a heart attack on Thursday, July 12.


According to film director Behn Cervantes, Gomez did not wake up from an afternoon sleep at her residence in Quezon City. Her son found out that she had died when he tried to wake her up at around 2pm, Cervantes told the media.

Maita Gomez’ death was also confirmed by her family and friends in social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

ABS-CBN News reported that Gomez was once married to folk singer Heber Bartolome, with whom she had two children.

She became a political and economic reforms and women’s rights advocate after the 1986 EDSA revolution.

She co-chaired Makabayan, a coalition of several militant left organizations in the Philippines.
