Italy Earthquake May 20, 2012 Update

>
A magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck northeast Italy at 4:04 a.m. Sunday killing at least four people, collapsing factories, damaged churches and a mediaeval castle, and sending residents running out into the streets.

The temblor has epicenter about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of 5 kilometers (3.2 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was followed by a series of jolting aftershocks such as a 5.1-magnitude temblor an hour later.

Many historic churches and other buildings were seriously damaged by the quake. One of them is the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, whose ceiling collapsed. Estense Castle was severely damaged also.
According to a Yahoo! report, the quake left a gaping hole and gashes in the side of the Sant' Agostino's Renaissance style town hall, which officials said was in danger of total collapse. The town's streets were strewn with rubble and the stench of gas filled the town and raised fears of explosions.
