3 PH universities among world’s best English-teaching schools

MANILA, Philippines – Three Philippine Universities are among the top 50 universities in the world when it comes to teaching English according to a new survey by the London-based research and ratings firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

admu.edu.ph photo
In a statement sent to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, QS said the country’s “specialist strength” in the English language was affirmed in results of its latest World University Rankings by Subject, an index that rates universities across 29 disciplines.

Ateneo de Manila University posted the highest rating of all Philippine schools, ranking 24th in English language and literature. University of the Philippines ranked 32 while De La Salle University ranked 44th.
World-renowned universities in the United Kingdom and the United States took the top five spots (in this order): Cambridge, Harvard, Oxford, Yale and University of California Berkeley.

“The specialist strengths of Philippine universities in English language and literature are clearly shown in these rankings. The country should be proud of their achievements,” Ben Sowter, QS research chief, said in the statement sent to the Inquirer.

The Philippines rated in only one other discipline, with UP placing within the 101-150 bracket in Geography.
QS ranked schools on 29 subjects “based on academic reputation, employer reputation, and citations per paper,” QS said.

Amid strong showing in English, Philippine universities have been slipping in world rankings in the past few years.

Blackberry 10 delayed until 2013

Blackberry 10 delayed until 2013

Already facing bleak sales and earnings, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion may risk another beating as it announced its BlackBerry 10 operating system may be delayed until 2013.

RIM admitted during a “disastrous” quarterly earnings report that work on BlackBerry 10 had taken longer than expected, according to a report on tech site TechRadar.com.

“RIM’s development teams are relentlessly focused on ensuring the quality and reliability of the platform and I will not compromise the product by delivering it before it is ready. I am confident that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones will provide a ground-breaking next generation smartphone user experience,” it quoted CEO Thorsten Heins as saying.

“The reception of the BlackBerry 10 platform by our key carrier partners has been very positive and they are looking forward to going to market with BlackBerry 10 smartphones in the first quarter of calendar 2013,” he added.

But TechRadar.com said the announcement could be a staggering blow that will send RIM’s ever-dwindling share price further into the doldrums.

It noted the next-generation OS has been regarded as the only thing which can save RIM from the smartphone abyss - RIM already announced a restructuring effort will now see a total cull of 5,000 jobs.

“The big question now is can the company survive in its current form until the first BB10 handsets reach the hands of its remaining loyal users? That lifeboat in the middle of the shark-infested ocean now seems a lot further away,” TechRadar.com said.

Davao's Sara Duterte finally apologizes to sheriff

Davao's Sara Duterte finally apologizes to sheriff

Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio finally apologized to Regional Trial Court branch 16 sheriff Abe Andres whom she punched in July last year.

It can be recalled that the lady mayor had hit Andres who refused to grant her request to delay for 2 hours the demolition of squatters’ shanties at Barangay Soliman in Agdao district.

She extended her apology to Andres for the first time on Thursday, June 28.
“Gusto lang nako ipa-abot kay Abe Andres ug sa iyang pamilya bisag wala sila didto, apektado sila sa nahitabo,” Duterte-Carpio said, according to reports.

Andres, reports said, was detailed to the Supreme Court in Manila a few weeks after the incident.

The mayor’s move received negative reactions from netizens, with some saying that she only said sorry because the local election is getting near.

Duterte-Carpio, apparently, will not seek re-election in 2013.

Shamcey Supsup is new DOT endorser

Shamcey Supsup is new DOT endorser

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Tourism (DOT) just got a new celebrity endorser to promote Philippine tourism.

DOT reported yesterday that Miss Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup would be appearing in a new television ad to encourage local and foreign travelers to visit the country’s different tourist destinations.

Supsup’s commercial is a partnership project between the DOT and Smart Communications Inc. in support of the “It’s more fun in the Philippines” campaign.

“We welcome this arrangement, especially now that social media is considered to be a highly effective means of transmitting information,” Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. said.

According to Smart Wireless advisor chief Orlando Vea, the wireless service provider is happy to help the DOT promote the country as a fun destination through Web and mobile technologies, which he said, is driving the growth of travel and tourism worldwide.

Under the project, Smart will release a Live More travel app and website that will feature different provinces, tourist destinations and activities; and provide on-site support during local festivals and other domestic tourism-related activities.

Jimenez said the partnership with SMART is expected to complement the DOT’s new campaign, which banks on the country’s fundamental strength: the Filipino people.

“Through these initiatives, we hope to rally more Filipinos to explore the beauty of the Philippines, as well engage everyone in becoming tourism ambassadors who will ensure that foreign guests will always have a positive, memorable, and fun experience in the country,” Jimenez explained.

SMART has also produced a Limestone billboard and a web-based SMS broadcast service called Infoboard for the DOT.

The eight-year partnership is just one of the joint initiatives that DOT has been pursuing with the private sector to push its tourism programs.

Call Me Maybe feat. UAAP Season 75 players (Video)

Call Me Maybe feat. UAAP Season 75 players (Video)

The 8 basketball teams of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 75 did a wacky cover of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe.

Team members from the Adamson Falcons, Ateneo Blue Eagles, FEU Tamaraws, La Salle Green Archers, UST Growling Tigers, UP Fighting Maroons, UE Red Warriors, and the upcoming season’s host NU Bulldogs participated in a funny but cute cover of the popular song.

It could have been more choreographed but we know how shy these young cagers could get especially in front of the camera.

Meanwhile, UAAP season 75 will kick off on July 14 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena with a traditional doubleheader – NU vs UE and UST vs FEU.

Watch the UAAP season 75 version of Call Me Maybe below.

Lotis Key reveals Dolphy wanted to marry her

Lotis Key reveals Dolphy wanted to marry her

Minnesota-based writer, director and actress Lotis Key, Dolphy’s girlfriend in the 1970s, admitted that the Comedy King offered her marriage.

In her story, which was published by ABS-CBN News, Lotis revealed that she and Dolphy “could both die laughing” from their own jokes.

“Maybe that’s why he wanted us to marry,” she said.

Lotis said Dolphy bought wedding rings, but she did not accept his marriage proposal because she wanted him to talk to his children first, which the Comedy King “never did.”

“Every few months [he] would bring out those rings and lay them on my dressing table, my pillow, my plate, and just look at me and raise his eyebrows,” Lotis said.

The multi-talented actress said she would laugh and say, “What are we going to do? Run away and live on a desert island? These kids are a part of your life. You have to talk to them!”

At the end of her story, Lotis described Dolphy as ‘the sunshine of her life’.

“Somewhere in time we’ll always be connected, two giggling kids in blue jeans. In my old age now, I think of you and smile,” she wrote.

The King of Comedy is presently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Makati Medical Center.

Doctors from Makati Med in their latest medical bulletin said Dolphy has been cleared of pneumonia, but some infections remained.

Facebook Automatically Changed Everyone's Email Add

Facebook Automatically Changed Everyone's Email Add

Facebook just removed everyone's email address from their profile and replaced it with an @facebook.com email address without asking you. Here's how to easily fix the problem.

Facebook launched its own email service back in 2010, which was promptly forgotten by everyone. This morning, Forbes noticed that they removed everyone's email addresses from their profiles, replacing them with an @facebook.com email address instead (not Facebook's internal email address which they use for notifications and password resets, just the one listed on your profile). Luckily, it's easy to get your old email address back on your profile:

  •     Click "About" on your profile and scroll down to your email address. Click "Edit" to change them.
  •     Click on the circle next to your Facebook email address and change its setting to "Hidden From Timeline".
  •     Click on the circle next to your other email addresses and change their settings to "Shown On Timeline".
  •     Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit popup (Don't forget this step).

That's all it takes. It's a really quick fix, but it was a big jerk move for Facebook to do this without asking permission, or even telling you that it happened. Spread this info around so people don't get stuck without any contact information, too, lest we lose the one aspect of Facebook that was still useful.
