>
Around 100 families were left homeless after a fire razed a commercial and residential area along Rizal Street in Mati City, Davao Oriental on Sunday evening, June 24, 2012.

The fire reportedly started inside an air conditioning repair shop which is below the old Envir theater (now Christian Life School or CLS).

It affected the block from the border of the new Franco Building (infront of BDO) to the firewall of the new Pullan Building (fronting the Espinosa residence).

City administrator Richard Villacorte said the fire started at around 8:15 p.m. amid a citiwide blackout that started before 6pm on the same night.

According to initial reports, several vehicles including a 10-wheeler truck were hit. A Caltex gasoline station infront of the burning building and a BDO bank across the street almost caught fire.

Fire trucks from the municipalities of Governor Generoso, Banaybanay, Lupon, San Isidro and Manay responded to augment those from Mati.

There was an unconfirmed report that the fire killed 1 male person. The victim’s name, however, remained unknown as of this posting.
